Here's a Quick Way To Know If You're An Underpaid Blogger

Scenario #1
If you:
  • Regularly create high quality, valuable content
  • Actively promote your blog
  • Don't make a reasonable hourly wage
You are UNDERPAID.

Scenario #2

If you:
  • Spend more time checking ad/earning stats than creating high-quality, valuable content
  • Are more interested in monitoring traffic than promoting your blog
  • Also don't make a reasonable hourly wage
Whatever trickle of income (if any) you're making is JUST RIGHT - get used to it.

If you are a Scenario #1 blogger: Keep doing what you're doing; you will likely be rewarded sooner or later. You are a winner.

If you are a Scenario #2 blogger: Punt the ads, get off the daily traffic rollercoaster and spend your time doing something productive; like building and promoting a blog you can be proud of. Winners do it.

That is all.

  1. I must be a scenario #3 blogger. Just wanted you to know that I am obsessed, and paralyzed, after the post on headlines. Thank you very much.

Piss and love from Minnesota. (Is this going to get old?)

  2. Should have known I couldn't categorize you, TK. Are you talking about the post on writing headlines first, etc? If so, yeah, I found it tough at first, too (but cool in the end).

"Piss and love" will never get old. It has an evergreen WTF? effect.

  3. Well, if you coined "evergreen," I'm with you.

Yes, that's the post, and yes, that's cool, but it just made things "more challenging" as they say.

  4. You will so thank me later. :D And I know exactly what you mean.

  7. Oh great, i got stuck on scenario #1 and #2. Guess, i am in between.

    Man, one thing, nice comments.

  8. Now, John, I do have a side that is distinctively smartass, but in that case, I was being ingenuous. My paycheck is considerably lower than most people suspect.

I really should start slacking the ROI is far higher. . . . or learn to spell with 1/3 the letters. Oh wait, the I type I do that already. :)

  9. Yo David-

I've been in-between too, but personally I've found preoccupation with stats to be a creativity killer and really not all that exciting. It puts us in a short-term mindset when we could be doing things that really matter for the long-term.

  10. Yes Liz, but it is my personal duty to bring the smartass in you to the fore.>:D

You are probably one of the most underpaid bloggers out there. I wonder if you get teacher flashbacks?

  11. No worries, John, I have a big idea. Or have you already figured that out?

  12. Why do you think I'm over there all the time? :)

  13. Oh, I thought you were looking for Wendy's blog, took a wrong turn, and hung around because you felt sorry me. People do that you know.
    Give me sympathy comments. :)

  14. Liz, it's total self-interest, I'm afraid. Hanging out at the SOB Den makes me better in more ways than one. Plus I have a bartending gig over there.

  15. Hi John. Stumbled on your site--and thank goodness I did!!

I'm a new blogger, and spend every waking moment learning and improving my blog and help further my passion and cause, which is to help educate and make others aware of Internet Safety issues and concerns. There are many Internet Safety sites out "there", but I live this---I am the Regional Office of Educations Internet Safety Coordinator, provide presenations to parents and teachers that I developed, teach 2nd and 3rd graders online safety curriculum I created, write a regular newspaper column, and work with over 500 children every week in a computer lab setting. So this is more than a job for me...

So, hopefully, I fall into your first category, as online safety has been a intense passion of mine for the past several years.

I want my blog to be different. Current, insightful, educational, and thought-provoking. Hopefully, at the very least, to begin a dialog with others and especially ones children.

I have gotten great feedback thus far, but am wracking my brain trying to get more people to leave more comments. After all, its a give and take, right? How can I do this???

Thank you for your valuable information. If you have a "free" moment and the inclination, please take a moment and look at my site--perhaps you would have a suggestion for me???

    Happy Easter everyone!
